On Palm Sunday, April 13, 2014, the Sunday school held its annual Bake Sale. This year the kids voted to raise money for the Animal Welfare League of Laurel. We are THRILLED to announce that we raised $431.65 for this wonderful cause! This is quite possibly our most successful bake sale, to date! What an incredible blessing it is to be a part of such a generous congregation. No matter what it is that the children of our church do, you support them - and so many other areas of our church. Thank you for your love, support, and generosity. A HUGE thank you to all of our families who baked, frosted, and put together such delectable delights, without your efforts we absolutely couldn't taste such sweet success.

As we enter into April it's time to turn our focus to the Sunday School's next important event - the annual Bake Sale. The Laurel UMC's Annual Sunday School Bake Sale will be held on Palm Sunday, April 13, 2014 before and after worship. We hold this Bake Sale each year to raise funds for an organization of the kids' choosing. Our first year was all about creating "Sunshine Baskets" for the children's ward at one of our hospitals, next we raised money for ZooMontana, then we put the money back into the church for the new roof, and last year we raised money for the Jessie Rees Foundation's JoyJars. At this time the kids and I are still throwing ideas around about what we want the money to go towards, but we'll definitely be able to fill in that blank by Bake Sale time. This is an event that could not be done without the parents and families of our kiddos, so please be sure to take the time to sign up on the clipboard in the education wing so we have some idea of what kinds (and how many) goodies we can expect. So mark those calendars and prepare to bring your appetites and pocketbooks on Palm Sunday so that you can support our Sunday school's most beloved fundraiser! Love & Blessings on your week, Becca Youth in grades kindergarten-5th have been invited by St. Anthony's Catholic Church's youth to attend a movie at the Vue & Brew in Laurel! Movie: The Nut Job (animated, rated PG) When: Wednesday, Jan. 29 @ 4-5:45pm (meet at the Vue & Brew at 3:45pm) Cost: $2/ticket Snacks available for purchase **Parents and brothers and sisters and friends are also invited** St. Anthony's used to invite the youth of the community for an afternoon roller skating adventure, with the closing of the skating rink, they hope you'll join in some movie-viewing fun! Watch the movie's trailer below... We received a thank you earlier in the week from the Jessie Rees Foundation, which you can read below: Laurel United Methodist Church (Sunday School Kids), You'll recall that the proceeds from our 2013 Bake Sale went to the Jessie Rees Foundation to create more JoyJars. By taking the time to bake goodies with your family and putting forth your most charming faces, you (along with our generous congregation) were able to raise money for such an important cause! Jessie was and is an excellent example of just how much a single individual with an idea can do for a whole lot of people. Her motto was that saying from the thank you note: "NEGU: Never Ever Give Up!" It doesn't matter how small or young you are, inside is an incredible person who is capable of great and amazing things - you've just got to believe. Believe in you and believe your faith will bring you through! Let's adopt that mission: NEGU!
With December fast approaching there are a few dates that we want you to be aware of. First, Advent Wreaths. We'll be handing out Advent Wreaths (or candles for those of you who still have your wreaths from years past) on Sunday, Dec. 2nd. The first Sunday of Advent is Dec. 2nd. Second, Christmas Program. 'Tis the season to set our sights toward the Christmas program. Parents, guardians, go ahead and breathe a sigh of relief, as this year's program requires virtually no memorization! (Really, go ahead and do a happy dance - I know I did). Because of that we'll rehearse during Chapel Time and only require two Saturday rehearsals (including the dress rehearsal). Christmas Program Practice Schedule:
Third, Hanging of the Greens. Bring the family and come help decorate and prepare our church for the Christmas season on Saturday, Dec. 8th at 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. From your youngest to your oldest, we will have things to for all to help with. The kids are especially invited to get the tree set up in the Fellowship Hall, followed by some crafts. We hope to see you there! Fourth, Caroling. Join us Sunday, Dec 16th at 4:45 p.m. for Christmas Caroling to the local care centers. We will meet at UMC at 4:45 p.m. drive to The Crossings, Evergreen around 5:30 p.m. and then to Tendernest around 6:00 p.m. After caroling we will return to UMC for some hot cocoa, chili and visiting. A signup sheet will be out on the table at church. Please be sure to sign up if you are planning on attending so we can make sure there is enough food. This past Sunday (the 17th), the Junior High class decided on a service project they'd like to do as a part of a lesson. The project they chose is able to extend to all the Sunday School classes. So what is it, you ask?
We will be collecting canned food items to donate to Community Hope. The kickoff for this project will be at the Fall Carnival on October 30th. Each class will again collect canned food items (as we did earlier in the year) until the Sunday before Thanksgiving. This information is so fresh, I haven't even had the chance to tell the other classes yet, but start thinking now what you can do to help your class collect the most cans. If heading out to the community and going door-to-door to collect cans sounds like something you'd like to do - remember you'll need your parents' permission and it's important that you not go out by yourself. I'll be sending information home with you next Sunday and we'll talk more about this during Chapel Time. As always, it was great to see all your beautiful faces! Remember, even though we no longer have the "Bible Bucks" store, bringing a friend automatically equals a trip to what once was the Bible Buck Store (if that makes any sense). I hope you have a wonderfully blessed week! Becca I hope you're ready for it because February is going to be jam-packed full of Caring & Sharing!
February 7th marks the start of our competition amongst the classrooms to see who can collect the most canned food items to donate to Community Hope. You have ALL month to collect! The winners will get a cake & icecream party! All month long you are invited to Bring a Friend. You might be thinking, "I'm always invited to bring a friend, what's so new & exciting about this?" Well this month, if you bring a friend, you and that friend will get to pick a prize from the goody basket! February 14th we will be collecting a special offering to send to Haiti to assist in the relief effort. (Parents, for more information about Haiti visit the church's general website @ http://www.umclaurel.org). February 28th the Sunday School will be putting on a Bake Sale following both services. The money raised from this will be donated to a local charity. I will put together a list of several different agencies and you kids will get to vote to choose which charity will receive our donation! I'm crazy excited for February and to meet all of your wonderful friends! Love & Blessings on your Week, Becca |
